Have you been told that you need a dental procedure that requires sedation? If so, there’s no need to worry, we have several methods of dental sedation to choose from. We see many patients who are fearful of dental procedures. Sometimes this fear is due to past traumatic events; sometimes it’s a phobia due to past unpleasant experiences. Whatever the reason, we help ease your tensions by giving you several sedation options. At David Rice, DDS we want to ensure your dental experience is a pleasant one.
With different dental procedures, there are different types of sedation methods. At our Elgin IL, South Elgin, (60123 area), and surrounding area offices we take the time to review both your medical and dental history with you and choose the appropriate sedation based that history. We realize that every patient is different and requires their own individualized plan when it comes to procedures and sedation techniques. Here is an example of common types of sedation we provide to our patients
One popular type of sedation that is used in dental procedures, especially for those who are somewhat fearful of dentistry, is oral sedation. With oral sedation a patient is given an oral medication to help alleviate some of the anxiety they may experience from in-office dental procedures. With oral sedation a patient is typically given a prescription for a medication and instructed to take it prior to their appointment. In some cases the oral sedation is administered in the office. The most typical oral sedation used is Valium or Triazelam.
For more involved dental procedures we may want to use IV sedations. IV sedation, also referred to as light conscious sedation, is when sedation medication is administered through IV tubing directly into the patient’s vein. IV sedation is used for more involved dental procedures and helps a patient feel comfortable and at ease during the procedure. The typical medications used for light conscious sedation are Midazelam or Versed.
For patients that require sleep dentistry we provide deep conscious sedation, also known as general anesthesia. Deep conscious sedation is generally used in very involved dental procedures and requires a medical check-up prior to administration of general anesthesia. Deep conscious sedation is only used in extreme cases and only when necessary.
If you are in need of a dental procedure which requires sedation of any kind, we will do our part to explain in depth what is involved. At David Rice, DDS we pride ourselves in being able to offer many choices for our patients. We believe each individual should be treated that way and always strive you numerous choices.
